Things That Work

I'm not as expert on knife sharpening as this guy, but I am an aficionado of the sharp blade.  I have an electric sharpener, ("The Choice of Professional Chefs" it claims) stones, and various other gadgets and gizmos.  I don't think anything can put an edge on a knife like the expert use of an Arkansas stone, but I have never masterd the art.  Last May I extolled the virtue of using an old leather belt as a cheap strop, but none of these things beats the Dial-X Sharpener for ease of use, versatility, and results.  Versatile because it not only sharpens knives, but scissors, shears and those curly edged bread knives as well.  I found it tucked away in a cabinet and tried it for the first time in about 30 years.  Ay Carumba!  If you see one at a yard sale buy it, because it's not made anymore (that I can find).  BTW, Steve's site is a good resource.

Thank you for mentioning my knife sharpening website www.ameritech.net/users/knives/index.htm. Scraping sharpeners like the old Dial-X that you show do create an agressive edge, however the edge is ragged and thin (a wire edge) and tend not to hold up well in use. They are still available in many guises. One of the best is the Sharpen-It, made by Meyerco. No, I don't sell them.

Regarding the header on this page, you could go further and say virtually all elected officials are liars. The Democrats lie about sex and relationships, the Republicans lie about money and power. Examine the lies of both over the past 20 years and decide which has done the most damage to this country. Democrats may hurt your sensibilities, but most of them have the nations best interests at heart. Republicans have their own interests at heart. The new neo-conservative policies of the Republicans are destroying our domestic economy and our international reputation, and fouling the environment, all the while filling the pockets of oil, telecom and other special interests. Our children and grandchildren will pay the price.
