There are persistant rumors that at least two of the male POW's in Gulf One were also raped. It's an Arab thing.
Posted by: Chuck on November 6, 2003 10:39 AMAnd I wouldn't be surprized to learn they were true, but it would not alter my point.
Posted by: Rodger Schultz on November 6, 2003 11:02 AMWell, all this must be true, but most importantly, we must make absolutely sure that our officers don't frighten Iraqi terrorists by firing their weapons during interrogations.
That just wouldn't be civilized.
Posted by: Spoons on November 6, 2003 11:04 AMI see absolutely no reason for a Draft. Nor have I seen anyone give a good reason for one.
Oh, I think there are good reasons, it's just that you don't agree they're good.
Posted by: Rodger Schultz on November 6, 2003 12:07 PMGood reasons for a draft?
Like taking a highly competent group of professional soldiers who do their job in large part because they chose to be there, and dilute that group with a bunch of whigning ass bitches who would rather be sitting at home in their parents basement doing bong hits and jerking off?
If a war is not popular enough to be fought with volunteers, then it's not popular enough to be fought at all. And if enough Americans don't feel like defending this country against the Tangos, then we deserve to be riven asunder.
Posted by: petro on November 6, 2003 07:34 PMActually, draftees make surprisingly good soldiers. Maybe not as good as volunteers -- but remember that the Tet offensive was crushed (largely) by G.I. draftees.
But that's beside the point. Women don't belong in combat areas, period.

Posted by: Merrily on November 7, 2003 08:03 AMThing is, we have not exhausted the supply of volunteers. The services must turn many away because of the small size of the US military. What needs to be done first, before any thought of conscription, is to allow the services to become a bit larger. Especially the Army. And do it with volunteers. Then, if goals can't reasonably be met, consider conscription. As things stand now the reserve forces are being stretched well beyond anything previously envisioned.
