Some good from outta Sadaam's head

This statue was made by an Iraqi artist named Kalat, who for years was forced by Saddam Hussein to make the many hundreds of bronze busts of Saddam that dotted Baghdad. This artist was so grateful that the Americans liberated his country, he melted 3 of the fallen Saddam heads and made a memorial statue dedicated to the American soldiers and their fallen comrades. Kalat worked on this night and day for several months. To the left of the kneeling soldier is a small Iraqi girl giving the soldier comfort as he mourns the loss of his comrade in arms. It is currently on display outside the palace that is now home to the 4th Infantry division. It will eventually be shipped and shown at the memorial museum in Fort Hood, Texas.

WOW
Fitting, touching.

Nice catch Roger.

More and more good news items will be coming from Iraqi this year. There will be so many that it will be increasingly difficult for the media to suppress them.

Posted by: Jake at February 16, 2004 09:29 PM

Yeah... why hasn't CNN shown this and interviewed the sculptor?

Posted by: TrooperJohnSmith at February 16, 2004 11:00 PM

Why is that picture so damn blurry?

Oh - those are tears. Nevermind.

God Bless.

Posted by: Greg Zywicki at February 17, 2004 12:33 PM

A touching sculpture. This should give Peter Jennings comfort knowing that all the artists that lost their jobs due to Saddam being removed still have work.

Posted by: Darren at February 17, 2004 02:24 PM

Yes, the statue is all well and good, but can any of you name one actual reason why we went in there besides to make statues? I can't. Believe me, I respect art as much as anyone else (hell, I'm a Music major from Massachusetts). I can't honestly say that we had any valid reason to go into Iraq except for Bush to finish what his dad started. Yes, his dad had a valid reason. For crying out loud, he invaded a country! What did he do this time, speak poorly of the President's speeches? The man can't even pronounce Nuclear. Give me a break

Posted by: Rob Miller at February 17, 2004 03:58 PM

Oh my God, "Rob", the effing statue speaks for itself. Friggin' liberal. This is a tribute by an Iraqi to the efforts of our brave men and women. You can't look past your political rhetoric to see it. Fool.

Posted by: Chris Smith at February 17, 2004 04:26 PM

It was the OOOOIIIILLLLL!

Asshat.

Posted by: skh at February 17, 2004 04:27 PM

Geeze Rob, way to be such a damn liberal. Why can't you ppl (and by you ppl I mean liberals) take this at face value? Do we always need to put out some political agenda?

Posted by: Steve Sullivan at February 17, 2004 04:48 PM

You're pounding your puds. The "Robs" would only support (maybe) war against the Country of al-Qaeda (I think it's in France some place?). Forget the destabilizing influence of Saddam funding our enemies. Nuanced argument about the benefit of an Islamic democracy in the Middle East is lost in the black hole of liberal idealism. "Russia never nuked us so Reagan was wrong." Right, Rob? Don't blame Rob, blame the education system and lazy parents.

Posted by: Rodger Schultz at February 17, 2004 07:30 PM

I said what I said because 500 Americans died over there when they shouldn't have been there in the first place. Do any of you have enough common sense to realize that Bush has lied to us from the beginning?!? So far, Bush has only thrown our economy out the window, cut jobs, made taxes higher with his absolutly shitty tax plan (for cryin out loud, did you read his budget? A kindergardner could manage money better!), and killed hundreds of Americans who never needed to be there in the first place. He's just there for oil. Why don't you morons go read a text book for a change?

Posted by: Rob Miller at February 17, 2004 07:35 PM

Yep, Rob. It was all about the oil. So when are gas prices going down? Yep its about oil. We get less than 10% of our oil from the Middle East. You go read a book, pal. If you want to talk about politics come join us at www.protestwarrior.com.

Posted by: Chris Smith at February 17, 2004 07:43 PM

Rob, you prolly don't know it, but not a single thing you just cited can be backed up by fact. None. Nada. Zip.

Posted by: Rodger Schultz at February 17, 2004 08:25 PM

Poor Rob hasn't read a book since "Dick and Jane Reader" - you know the first book just after kindergarten - and has problems with multi-syllable words like kindergardner (sic). Like most ignorant liberals, he tries to make up for lack of knowledge by masking his ignorance or stupidity with noise. I sincerely believe passing a literacy and basic civics test should be a requirement for voter eligibility.

Posted by: Dick at February 17, 2004 10:46 PM

I'd second that requirement. But ppl like Martin Sheen wou definately oppose that. I'm so glad that ppl with only a high school (yep, that's right Sheen never went to college) diploma understand the stubtle art of economics and political science.

Posted by: Steve at February 17, 2004 11:06 PM

I'm calling bullshit on Rob Miller. He's waaay too close to the stereotype to be real. Let's review:
- Music Major from Massachusetts
- Same old tired and oft-refuted arguments trotted out again.
- "Bush is Stupid" rhetoric
- Pretense of intellectual superiority

Seriously, his performance in this thread is just too close to parody for me to buy it. Is Frank J having some fun with us or something?

Posted by: Korgmeister at February 18, 2004 12:02 AM

To sorta get back to the subject: I think that sculpture was well done and a great (and well deserved) tribute to the US armed forces.

Kudos to the sculptor. And hisses to the f*cking US mainstream media for totally ignoring this story. If not for the Net we'd never have known about it.

Gotta love the net, man :D

Posted by: Korgmeister at February 18, 2004 06:00 AM

That's the most eloquent argument I have EVER seen for the Liberation of Iraq. They say, "a picture is worth a thousand words", but the meaning of that rarely has the simple impact this does.

Posted by: CavlierX at February 18, 2004 10:04 AM

Hey Rob,
You said that Bush lied? Well if he lied then all of these people lied right?
This would be almost laughable if it wasn’t so serious…

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line." - President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." - President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face." - Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983." S - Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs." - Letter to President Clinton, signed by Sens. Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." - Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies." - Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has invigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies." - Letter to President Bush, Signed by Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL,) and others, Dec, 5, 2001

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandated of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." - Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." - Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons..." - Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force-- if necessary-- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do" Rep. - Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weap ons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members .. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." - Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real ..." - Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

SO NOW THE DEMOCRATS SAY PRESIDENT BUSH LIED, THAT THERE NEVER WERE ANY WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION AND HE TOOK US TO WAR FOR HIS OIL BUDDIES??? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.............................

Can anyone tell me what the original source of this information is? I would like to send this to my local newspapers, sentaors, congressman and ask why we don't hear more about this type of news.

Any assistance you can provide, will be appreciated.

Posted by: LLL at February 18, 2004 06:00 PM

Hey, Rob Miller, what kind of human being are you? You think we didn't have any reason to go into Iraq? You don't think humans have an obligation to relieve suffering of other humans when it's within their power to do so? You wouldn't help a hungry child, a rape victim, a torture victim, someone dying at the hands of a brutal bastard if it was within your ability to do so?

Today we complain about all the governments, churchs, groups and others who looked away while the Holocaust was going on, but you want us to do the same thing today. Shame, shame on you.

This is such a beautiful schulpture it should be shown at the Capitol of the United States so everyone can see it, and know the reason why it was made. What official can we contact to stress this suggestion? This is very good medicine for the Liberal's belly ache.

Just flat out awsome. Nothing else needs to be said. Well, Rob the Lib is a retard, but that's inherant in the Democratic way of life, I think.

Posted by: Raging Dave at February 18, 2004 10:08 PM

So, some enterprising manufacturer somewhere is working with the artist to make small copies so I can buy one, right?

right? Franklin Mint, maybe?

& Rob Miller - you see no reason to stop annual payments of US$25,000 to the families of terrorist civilian-killers? Even when the publicly stated aims of the terrorists is to kill (a) jews, (b) christians, (c) hindus (d) everybody else that's not muslim and (e) all the muslims that aren't properly vicious? Are you unconnected with the groups I just listed, or what? It's a pretty comprehensive group.

Are you okay with sheltering people who murder a 70+ old man by shoving his wheelchair into the ocean? No problems there for you? Does the Achille Lauro ring a bell? Did you know we caught the guy? Do you know where?

ahh . . /rant.

Carl and Diana,

Wish I knew the answer. So I'm starting at my own grassroot level. I've written emails (and attached a link) to my Senators, Congressman, local newspaper... along with a certain news channel B-) Will it stir any action.. don't know. But it sure beats doing nothing!

It is a spoon full of medicine for sure!

Posted by: LLL at February 19, 2004 04:19 PM

Geeeezzzz, the Fuehrer would have been really proud of most of you!

Now, let's try that again:
I'll holler:"Do you want total war?

And the one of you who cheers the loudest gets a medal, ok?

Exited?

Too bad your Fuehrer is on his embarrassing way out. The world and most enlightened Americans have had enough of his lies and blunders.

Get well!

Posted by: BenGaia at February 19, 2004 08:57 PM

BenGaia and Rob appear to believe the old saying, "repeat the lie long enough and it will become truth".

Fuehrer? Come on, Ben. You can do better than that. Besides, Moveon.org already tried that one! The Bush=Nazi rhetoric is stale. And do I understand you to mean that you are in favor of a pro-war/anti-war, anti-Saddam/pro-Saddam, pro-ANWR/anti-ANWR, pro-gay/anti-gay, Vietnam hero/Hanoi-Fonda-ista, pro-troop/anti-POW-MIA, tax-raising, gold-digging, [alleged] intern-chasing, purple-heart-for-a-hangnail, bobblehead for POTUS? Sheesh!

Ron: No right to invade Iraq? Can your liberal mind wrap itself around this phrase: "Saddam violated the 1991 ceasefire agreement 15 days after it was signed."?
Please, arm yourself with information before making ...correction: repeating... false statements that have been fed to you by an emotional, reactionary Left-media. The UN[-necessary]'s lack of intestinal fortitude to back up its own threats for 10 years does not mean the U.S. and our allies (30-plus nations - I think) are all wrong for having the kahunas to stand up to Saddam.

Posted by: SuperToad at February 20, 2004 12:14 AM

The sculpture speaks volumes.
Obviously, some of the Iraqi people are grateful.

People need to see expressions like this. It could give a real lift to some.

Thanks for the find.

Posted by: SuperToad at February 20, 2004 12:17 AM

HAHAHA, yep our furher, Ben. What was Hitler again? Oh yea, National SOCIALIST Party and dictator. Moron!!!

Posted by: Chris Smith at February 20, 2004 01:14 PM

I've always disliked liberals, but that doesn't make Bush or this war okay.

The invasion of Iraq was not a defensive act. Bush knew this. He lied through his teeth to portray it as defensive in order to get the support he needed to carry it out. Troops following his orders killed at least 10,000 people.

Does that make Bush a mass murderer? That's debatable. One thing's for sure -- complaining about liberals is just a lame way of avoiding the tough questions.

Hey this is good stuff, I think all the people who are crying about what we are doing in the Middle East, Iraq AND that other place, should put up or shut up. If there is some other way to stop people from killing Americans then get out there and start doing it. Stop talking about it. Till you actually get out and do something other than sit safely in your homes and cry about all the injustice going on in the world, SHUT YOUR MOUTHS!!!

JUST ANOTHER JARHEAD.

Roger - we don't complain about liberals because they're liberals, but because they're assholes. But, that don't mean you can't be an asshole if you aint a liberal.

Posted by: Rodger Schultz at February 22, 2004 09:19 PM

Yea, Roger. YOu're right. Americans are the only ones who deserve to live the good life. Lets let those nasty Dictators stay in power. Screw the people ruled by them. We're they only ones worth sacrificing for, right Roger? Saddam only killed his own people, its none of our business. So lets see, if we plunder as a superpower, bad America! If we do nothing as a superpower, bad America! If we do something good as a superpower, bad America! If we have the power to spread democracy and forcefully make dictators see the door, then I'm all for it. I didn't see lies, I saw 12 years of deceptions and 12 years of Europeans and the UN sticking their heads in their rears. America came along in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq and brought hope to them. Yep, bad America!

Posted by: Chris at February 23, 2004 09:32 AM

03Grunt11 -- Let me get this straight, people like me who aren't killing foreigners aren't "doing anything" and therefore don't have the right to object to people like you killing foreigners, huh.

Rodger S. -- I totally see your point. Sometimes it seems as though there are as many conservative assholes as liberal assholes.

Chris -- Killing some foreigners to save others is a losing proposition. For every guy making a statue I bet there's ten daydreaming about driving the 'infidel invaders' from their homeland, a la 9/11.
