Where have you gone Billy Packer?

I growed up listening to ol' Packer, Thacker and Wacker (Billy, the late Jim Thacker, and "Bones" McKinney) call ACC basketball games for Pilot Life.  Billy Packer taught me more about  basketball than any other person, and I loved the guy.  He's become an old, mean asshat.

Three years ago a student ticket taker at an ACC game had the temerity to not know who he was, and ask to see his press pass.  Packer went ballistic and, if I remember correctly, left the girl in tears.  I was sad to hear it, but wrote it off as an unfortunate aberration  .  Even after my kids condemned him for his anti-Terp broadcasting style, I ignored it.  Slowly, as the little digs and slurs dribbled out of his flapper during games,  I was convinced.  Prick. Yesterday, I'd have - at the least - suspended him until he produced a diploma from some Prozac therapy clinic.  I might even have fired him.

His on-air ESPN evaluation of St. Joe's number one seeding was dead on, if a little too contentiously made.  When St. Joe's coach later parried with "experts who don't play the game," ex-Wake Forest player Packer turned mean.  "Maybe he should learn a little of his own school's  history," replied Packer.  He was referring to some game played in 1908, or thereabouts, when Wake Forest evidently beat St. Joseph's.  It was ugly, and unprofessional.  Limbo would have been fired for less.  Oh, that's right.  He was.

I'm afraid it's time for old Billy to call it a day.  He can start a blog, hate everybody, and make money off it.  I love this country.
