Fire in the hole

Update ...II

I received a response from HP about all those error messages ...

The issue you are experiencing might be due to corrupted Windows System files.

To resolve the issue, I recommend you once again try performing Destructive Recovery using the F10 Setup. A Destructive Recovery will format the hard drive. This will delete all the information on the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP and the original software that came with the computer.
Which echoes what y'all have been telling me.  Fortunately, I am able to send stuff up to the wife's computer, so is there a way to save, and plug-in later, whatever Windows file governs my connection info to my DSL?  Or is that even necessary?  Thanks.

Unfortunately once you do this, you're going to have to re-install all the programs you've added to this machine since you bought it. Not to mention all the updates. What you'll basically be doing is erasing everything off your hard drive and putting it back to the way it was when you first got the computer.

No it's not fun. I've had to do it a couple of times. It not only sucks, it blows.

So no. I wouldn't transfer your DSL connection files because you'll have to re-install that doing whatever you did the first time you installed it. But I would transfer any files that aren't programs that you want to save....like photos, text files etc.

Okay, thanks Rita, I've pretty much done that via transfer to the wife's computer. Of course, as soon as I pull the switch I'll discover all the stuff I missed and can't recover. So what. A good enema never hurt anyone. MMMMM, enema.

Try the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. It's usually used to transfer from one PC to the next, but you can use it to create the data files, burn 'em to CD/DVD. After you re-install XP from the manufacturer's media, run F&STW again, and "import" the data from your optical media.

One guy's FAQ, there are many more.

I'm back - but lost EVERYTHING because my wife did not have her computer on when I transferred stuff to her.
