Jim Calhoun - Recruiting Genius

Well, well, well. Not that most of you give a
good crap, but earlier the UCONN Huskies stole a prized hoops recruit
(Rudy Gay) right out of the Terps back yard. I don't think anyone
much cared, since he had no chance of starting while Nick Caner-Medley
was playing. But, when Maryland coach Gary Williams was asked about it,
he took a cryptic little shot at UCONN, saying "We could have scheduled
an AAU [Amateur Athletic Union] team and given them $25,000 like some
schools I know." UConn coach Jim Calhoun understood, and took
offense. The Baltimore Sun (of course)
white
washed the affair in Calhoun's favor. Well guess what?
The AAU team that Calhoun paid $20,000-plus for an exhibition scrimmage
didn't even exist before the game was scheduled, and does not exist now
that the game has been played. Oh, the "founder" of that AAU
team? Rudy Gay's high school coach. Ain't that cute.
Maryland was asked to make the same deal, and refused. God made Calhoun
pay though, by letting Georgia Tech whip his #1 ranked team in Hawaii.

Calhoun beat Ga. Tech for the national title last night, but he's still a cheater and piece of crap.

I pretty much gave up on pro basketball when the refs allowed carrying and travelling, gave up on pro football when Irsay took the Colts out of Baltimore, gave up on pro baseball when the brats went on strike, but held out for a while on college basketball, especially tournament time.
My friend Jim has said for years that even in college sports, it's about greed and ego, not the game, and that most of those involved are only about one step removed from prison. Looks like he was right. Disgusting.
