Perspectives

Let’s see now. Eli Manning, the first player selected in yesterday’s NFL draft, didn’t want to play for the San Diego Chargers because:
A. The cost of living in San Diego is even higher than in New York.

B. He’s allergic to warm weather 365 days a year.

C. The Chargers stink.

D. He’s used to always getting his way.

John Harris, Toledo Blade [Tillman makes Manning look even smaller]

Manning, was booed yesterday when commissioner Paul Tagliabue introduced him in New York as the top pick.  Writes Harris: "As Manning should now know, just by experiencing the entire country’s reaction to Tillman’s selfless act, it will be difficult to view Manning as anything other than a spoiled, selfish jock."

I believe the correct answer is "C" It was also reported his father, Archie, and his brother, Peyton, saw the Chargers as being stuck in the cellar for the next ten years. Based on that prognosis they helped engineer the trade that sent Eli to the Giants.

Besides, what does it say about the Chargers management when they ponied up big bucks for Drew Brees two years ago? Do they give up so quickly on their decisions? There's not a QB in the leage that set the world on fire coming straight out of college, especially first round draft picks.

I don't begrudge Eli Manning his decision but it does seem so selfish and petty in comparison to Pat Tillman's life choice.

This whole thing leaves me cold, and it has nothing to do with Tillman.

The NFL draft is a socialist program -- where they redistribute talent rather than money, to the team that "needs" it most. One of our basic American freedoms is to work where you want, not where last year's biggest loser says you should.

He's gonna stink the place up, anyway -- most 1st-year QBs do -- and NY isn't the friendliest place in the world to do that, as he'll soon discover.

KdT: Yes, it has nothing to do with Tillman except that Tillman makes these bastards look like rich, spoiled, me first fools who I have less and less respect for..

Yarbz..Tillman makes anyone who hasn't served look like that. He's the kind of guy that reminds us all we didn't quite measure up to the man we once thought we could be. God rest him and be merciful to us.

- Football's a game with one purpose: to give people something to talk about while holding a beverage.
- It's just a business, and it siphons off advertising funds which would be better spent on road racing (both open-wheel and sports cars).
- It's too genteel: naked ladies are frowned upon and nobody wears Nomex.
- It does have one thing going for it, though:
it's only popular in US/CAN.

One thing being missed in all this - I believe Sgt Tillman got his degree in 3 1/2 years, graduating summa cum laude. Dumb jock indeed!

NFL players and coaches have referred to their sport as "war" for many years now and no one ever pulled them up on it. I can't see that changing - not when the average player who at least attended college has trouble speaking English when interviewed.

Hell, I'm from San Diego, and I don't blame him. The Chargers suck ass.

He attended the University of Mississippi, which teaches its students that the Ole Miss philosophy of life is that 1. the world revolves around them and 2. if they don't get their way, they are to whine and then take their ball and go home.

He is a top Ole Miss student, obviously.
