Yeah! I thought the police moto was to "serve & protect".
Posted by MoFiZiX Gr4FiX at June 10, 2004 09:30 AMYeah, sometimes I think that means 'serve tickets and protect the city's revenue stream.'
Like when pissant village cops sit on the one mile of interstate that falls within their village limits and write speeding tickets nonstop all shift long ( http://www.dangerouslogic.com/archive/000492.html
)...
I see Chris is acquainted with our neighboring community of Johnson, Arkansas. Though since the state legislature passed a law prohibiting towns getting more than a certain percentage of their revenue from tickets, the speed traps have gotten better.
Posted by rita at June 10, 2004 09:52 AMCops=Revenue Agents. Call a cop, Pizza Delivery, and an Ambulance. See who gets there first. About half of them have never read or understand the Constitution. Experiment. Have yourself and 11 friends each ask a different cop the same simple question about guns. " How do I legally transport my gun to the range?". See how many different answers you get.
Posted by Brother Sean at June 10, 2004 10:58 AMI can't recall the exact city (I think it was Cleveland), but there was a tiny suburb that had a quarter-mile stretch of Interstate running through it, but no access to the highway inside city limits. Of course, the revenue generators, err, local cops would sit on that stretch and constantly write tickets.
Somebody sued on the grounds that because the cops had to leave their jurisdiction to set up the speed trap, any tickets thus written would be invalid.
And I'm pretty sure he won.

Posted by DougM at June 10, 2004 05:43 PMMy idea is that all revenue from local law enforcement should be sent to the state capital, then re-distributed based upon demographics.
That'll put an end to that.
